(for SATB choir & organ)
by Dan Locklair
The Chapel Hill Service was commissioned in 2019 by the Chapel of the Cross in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, in memory of Dale Volberg Reed. Mrs. Reed was a devoted member of the choir of the Chapel of the Cross for 47 years.
The Chapel Hill Service, composed in the spring and summer of 2019, consists of two services as found in Rite I of The Book of Common Prayer (1979):
Morning, which sets the traditional parts of the Ordinary of the Mass for choir, congregation, & organ;
Evening, which sets the traditional Evening Service canticles, Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis, for SATB choir & organ. Each canticle concludes with the 1662 Gloria. Opening Sentences from Psalm 96:9 for priest, SATB choir & organ begin Evening.
I wish to extend my appreciation to Dr. Joseph Causby, Director of Music, and The Rev. Elizabeth Marie Melchionna, Rector, of the Chapel of the Cross for offering me this commission. I also wish to convey my admiration to Professor John Reed and family for honoring the inspiring legacy of Dale Reed through the power and mystery of music – an artistic expression which she so dearly loved.

Opening Sentences (Psalm 96:9)
O worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness;
let the whole earth stand in awe of him.
Magnificat (The Song of Mary – Luke 1:46-55)
My soul doth magnify the Lord,
and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior.
For he hath regarded
the lowliness of his handmaiden.
For behold from henceforth
all generations shall call me blessed.
For he that is mighty hath magnified me,
and holy is his Name.
And his mercy is on them that fear him
throughout all generations.
He hath showed strength with his arm;
he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
He hath put down the mighty from their seat,
and hath exalted the humble and meek.
He hath filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich he hath sent empty away.
He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel,
as he promised to our forefathers,
Abraham and his seed for ever.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son:
and to the Holy Ghost;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be:
world without end. Amen.
Nunc Dimittis (The Song of Simeon – Luke 2:29-32)
Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace,
according to thy word;
For mine eyes have seen thy salvation,
which thou hast prepared before the face of all people,
To be a light to lighten the Gentiles,
and to be the glory of thy people Israel.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son:
and to the Holy Ghost;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be:
world without end. Amen.
