In Gold and Black
A Processional for Organ

As Composer-in-Residence and Professor of Music at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC, I feel it important to periodically compose new works that contribute to the life of the University. Past creations have included Phoenix and Again – An Overture for Full Orchestra, The Festival Setting of the Alma Mater (for congregation, choir, brass, organ and percussion), The Texture of Creation (for SATB choir, brass, organ and percussion), Phoenix Fanfare and Processional (for brass quartet, organ and percussion), Dona Nobis Pacem (for SATB choir, a cappella), Three Christmas Motets (for SATB choir, a cappella) and Shepherd’s Rejoice (for SATB choir, a cappella). Added to that list of pieces is now the organ processional, In Gold and Black.
In Gold and Black was originally composed in the late spring of 1993, but was extensively revised in June of 2002. Initially created at the kind suggestion of Dr. Donald Armitage (University Organist) for use at University convocations, In Gold and Black is warmly dedicated to all Wake Forest University administration, faculty, staff and students who make this fine school what it is today. Though it is my hope that In Gold and Black will become a part of the rich and valued traditions of Wake Forest University, it is also my hope that this piece will find use as well as a processional in other schools and/or churches and, even, in recital performances.
Approximately 5 minutes in length when played straight through, a number of places marked in the score allow the performer to achieve whatever length is desired.
