Prayer of Supplication and Thanksgiving (Anthem for SATB Chorus and Organ) sets words from A Thanksgiving for all God’s Mercies prayer as found in the service of Morning Prayer from the 1970 A Short Book of Common Prayer (in the common speech of today). The anthem was composed in 1971 in Mars Hill, North Carolina and is dedicated To the Class of 1971, Mars Hill College.
In 1972 it became the prize-winning anthem in the Choral Composition Contest sponsored by the District of Columbia Chapter of the American Guild of Organist. Its World Premiere occurred on 4 June 1972 in Washington National Cathedral conducted by Paul Callaway. In 1975 it was published by J. Fischer, then, in 1993, reassigned to Music 70. Prayer of Supplication and Thanksgiving is now published by Subito.
The energetic middle section of Prayer of Supplication and Thanksgiving is flanked by plainsong-inspired opening and closing sections. Much lyrical and unison choral writing, along with richly textured SATB writing and a supportive organ part, combine to create this approximately five-minute anthem.
