Composed in 1984 and dedicated to my brother-in-law and nieces, Mark, Courtney and Whitney Welshimer, Ayre for the Dance is a playful dialogue between the organ’s 8′ Trumpet and 8′ Diapason stops. Built on the Octatonic scale (C, D, E♭, F, F♯, A♭, A, B, C), an ostinato of this scale permeates the entire movement, from its “laid-back spirit” opening and closing sections to its vibrant middle section.
